Fire Fighter Recruit
“Red Shirt”

The Show Low Fire Department is interested in having eligible persons apply for the position of Fire Fighter Recruit as a pool of incumbents who are actively committed to working in the fire service.  This grade is a non-qualifying position that leads to hire as a Reserve Fire Fighter (Blue Shirt) position. All candidates must be willing to attend the Fire Academy and certify as FF I & II and EMT.  Eligible candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Posses a valid drivers license and have a clean driving record
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Provide documentation of a Health Physical stating you are fit to perform the duties of a fire fighter
  • Have vision correctable to 20/20 and be able to distinguish colors
  • Must work or live within a 35 minute radius of Fire Station 310
  • Attend training meetings
  • Be willing to ride along with on duty crew
  • Be interviewed
  • Have a background check
  • Be willing to work for minimum wage

The Show Low Fire Department has certain expectations for our recruits.  They are as follows:

  • Be familiar with the Show Low Fire Department Policy Manual
  • Maintain a good standard of conduct
  • Not use tobacco products
  • Maintain good physical condition
  • Be drug free

The Show Low Fire Department has essential functions for our recruits.  They are as follows:

  • Respond to appropriate incidents to provide support services (i.e. Rehab)
  • Attend drills, trainings and other special projects
  • Learn department policies
  • Learn fire fighting skills
  • Learn rescue techniques
  • Learn emergency medical techniques
  • Learn fire apparatus and equipment use
  • Learn salvage and overhaul operations
  • Demonstrate personal growth in skills, team work and fire fighting ability
